Biography

Luis Borrero graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1999 — the oldest art school in the United States — where he was honored with the prestigious Cresson Scholarship for European Studies, the Academy's highest distinction for a student. His travels through Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands ignited a lifelong investigation into the materials and techniques of the Old Masters that continues to define his studio practice today.

In 2005, deepening that investigation, he traveled to New York City to study historical pigments under the guidance of Peter Trubig — one of the few specialists in the preparation and use of traditional painting materials. This hands-on research into historical grounds, pigments, and binding media has shaped both his paintings and his teaching in ways that are unique in Puerto Rico.

His figurative work draws from the early Baroque tradition — Rembrandt, Velázquez, El Greco — filtered through a deeply personal and contemporary vision. His paintings are held in private collections in Puerto Rico and the United States, and have been featured in publications including Random House's Color for Painters by Al Gury.
